The rival Canadiens and Maple Leafs completed a rare trade Thursday, with Montreal sending forward Mikhail Grabovski to Toronto in exchange for prospect Greg Pateryn and a second-round draft pick in 2010. Markus Naslund, the former captain of the Vancouver Canucks, has signed with the Rangers the team announced in a conference call. The Rangers also announced they had signed former Buffalo defenseman Dmitri Kalinin. In Montreal, the Canadiens have signed veteran tough guy Georges Laraque to a US$4.5-million, three-year contract.

The San Jose Sharks have signed veteran defenceman Rob Blake to a US$5-million, one-year contract. Blake, 38, is tied for fourth among active NHL defensemen with 702 points (223-479) in 1,127 career NHL regular-season games with Los Angeles and Colorado.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have ensured their No. 1 goalie will be around for a long time. Marc-Andre Fleury signed a US$35-million, seven-year contract with the Penguins. The Pens also signed UFA forwards Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko.
